In this study, biocompatible, cost-effective, and biodegradable gelatin/gelatin/chitosan-based electrospun fiber mats loaded with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were prepared using a dual emulsification solvent evaporation technique. The potential and efficacy of the mats as a wound dressing was investigated for the healing of full-thickness wounds on the dorsal skin of Wistar rats. The potential of the mats as wound dressing was determined by evaluating the wound contraction rate and tensile strength of the wound dressings, which were compared with other commercially available wound dressings. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that ZnO NPs were well dispersed in the gelatin/gelatin/chitosan matrix. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the uniform distribution of ZnO NPs on the fiber surfaces. It was found that the fiber mats were flexible and biocompatible. The electrospun fibers were loaded with ZnO NPs (20 and 30 wt.%) while the loaded fibers exhibited good water vapor transmission rates (WVTRs). The wound contraction rate was significantly higher in the electrospun fibers with 30 wt.% ZnO NPs as compared to the other fiber types (control and commercial dressings). The histological examination of the healing wounds showed that the wounds treated with electrospun fibers with 30 wt.% ZnO NPs were completely reepithelialized, which was further supported by the increased
